American vs. Japanese

Pardon me for the use of Japanese because otherwise the difference between English and Japanese is not explained well.

Many Japanese think the Japanese translation of, "You are American and I am Japanese," is 「あなたはアメリカ人で私は日本人だ。」but this is misunderstanding. Proper translation is「あなたはアメリカ人かもしれないけれど私は日本人だ。」

The confrontational tone comes from the fact that the speaker compares the two nationals in an overly explicit manner. If he or she does not like Americans, the English is correct. Otherwise, he or she must use more gentle expressions.
